Kathy Salzberg adopted her toy Poodle Desi at Intergroom, an international grooming convention in New Jersey when he was two years old. Before semi-retiring to Eastham four years ago, Kathy ran The Village Groomer and Pet Supply in Walpole, MA for almost 30 years, a forty-year-old family business now run by her daughter Missi Salzberg. When Kathy met Desi, Missi was teaching seminars on retailing at the convention and a breeder from New Jersey wanted to give Desi to her because he could not be bred or shown due to a congenital leg problem. While Missi was busy, Kathy took care of him all weekend and it was instant karma. Since Missi already had five dogs of her own, Kathy advised her that she did not need another one and scooped up Desi herself. "We bonded," she explained. "I couldn't go home without him." She has had him for a year now and he loves coming to Nauset Kennels because the girls spoil him rotten and sometimes he gets to bunk in with a nice big canine companion to use as his personal pillow. He loves those full-figured older gals. As far as his leg problem, he is faster than a speeding bullet and can leap like a gazelle but he would rather be a pampered pet than a show dog any day.
