Quark and Dax - two of a litter of eight Labrador-Shepherd mutts, were rescued from the streets of Queens, NY on April 17, 2002, at ten days old, found cuddled next to their dead mother. That was when they entered our lives. The pups each fit in the palm of a hand, With friends, I fed and cared for them, saving the lives of all eight puppies. When the litter was nine weeks old, we adopted Quark, the runt, a mellow fellow and cute as a little black bear. Three weeks later, we brought home his sister, Dax, the only other black dog in the litter, probably Quark’s twin, and they have been inseparable since. Quark and Dax, or Quax as we sometimes call them, also bonded to our wonderful therapy Doberman, Duncan.
For three years, Duncan and the twins romped in Riverside Park in New York City and ran on the beaches of Provincetown. Quark and Duncan always loved a good game of tug of war. Duncan left us too early, but his spirit sent us Zorro, a Doberman puppy, and a champion show dog. Even now at four years old, Zorro relentlessly pesters Quark and Dax, but the three of them have become a team, crying if one leaves the other two behind. Zorro is a big, beautiful baby, so we tell people that the matching set of Quark and Dax are his body guards.
They are all fierce ball players, they love to run and dig in the sand. Quark and Dax have taught Zorro to appreciate swimming (although he still only goes in up to his knees). Most of all, they like to pile onto the bed, three black backs meeting in the middle, for an afternoon snooze.
