Tail of the Month

Hannah is a Wellfleetian, born and bred. She was born on August 12, 2002. Her mother, Kona, lives in Wellfleet with her people and when I found out that Kona was going to have puppies, I had a little chat with her and asked her to make me a little chocolate girl. When Kona was ready, she had eleven pups, three of them chocolate girls. I visited them when they were only days old and fell in love with the little girl who loved to lay on her back with all four feet in the air with a big smile on her face while Kona licked her belly.

Hannah came home to Truro when she was eight weeks old and she has had our hearts between her paws ever since. Her big brother Max a lab shepherd mix, was an old dog when she came home but he taught her all he knew, including that good dogs bend their paw under when resting. As Max grew less and less able to play, Hannah invented the “lying down tug of war game” so that Max could play with her. We lost Max when Hannah was a year old, but she still remembers to hold her paw the “right way”.

Hannah never met any food she wasn’t willing to eat and every morning she brings her Mom a banana (handed to her by Dad) and shares it with Mom, a bite for Hannah and a bite for Mom and then brings the peel back to Dad. Her only other tricks are to sneeze on command and “flap” her ears on command.

She makes us proud when she responds to voice commands off leash and never fails to make us laugh, no matter how miserable the day. She is the dog of our old age and she is our pleasure and treasure to have in our lives.
